Science is Fun!!

Last week, thanks to some of our Intel parents, Forest Hills was able to celebrate National Engineering Week. Each class was given a presentation on engineering, and then - a challenge to solve. In Middle School, the students were challenged with making a survival shelter. Each shelter had to be free-standing, hold at least one person, and stand up to wind and rain. Each group was given 10 bamboo rods, 3 trash bags, 2 feet of tape, unlimited string, and one hour to design, build, and adjust their shelters.
As a side note...one of our applied skill options for third term is engineering. We have a great group of volunteers lined up to lead this session, with the possibility of a field trip into Portland to see some projects one of the volunteers has worked on. If your child had a good time on Engineering Friday, encourage them to sign up for 7 Fridays of engineering experiences.
Here are some pictures of the kids building and presenting their shelters.
