Spring Play Auditions!

For the Spring Event this year, it is the middle school's turn to do the musical.  This year, we are doing "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat."  This last week, the middle schoolers signed up for what roles they would like to have.  If they signed up for any of the lead or secondary roles, we are asking that they audition.  Audition times are this Tuesday and Thursday after school until 4:00.  Students looking to audition need to come either Tuesday or Thursday (not both).  This should be a lot of fun as we put this together over the next couple months.

Stump the Pastor!!

On Monday, Pastors Warmbier and Koschmann from St. Peter's Lutheran Church and Mt. Olive Lutheran Church joined us for our religion class for a "Stump the Pastor" session. Prior to this, the students came up with questions about God, the Bible, and religion in general that they have been curious about. One prompt we gave them to spark some questions was, "You know those things you're planning to ask God when you meet him? Write those down." We had a great time hearing the answers to all these questions! Ask your child about a moment that stuck out to them from "Stump the Pastor"!

LEST 2016 Wrap-Up!

LEST 2016 is in the books.  We had a great weekend that included many accolades for our school and our students.  Our Dance Team took first place for the third straight year, our choir and handbell groups both brought home blue ribbons, our drama earned an outstanding performance, our math team took 2nd place, and the boys basketball team won consolation.  We also earned 5 blue ribbon music performances (1 for piano, 3 for solos, and one ensemble).  Individually, we brought home first places in math (5th grade), chess (5th grade), art (7th grade), technology (5th grade), and writing (7th grade).  In addition to those, we had three 2nd places (6th math, 6th chess, 7th chess), a third place (7th math), and a 6th grader recognized for high points in the swim meet.  We had a huge turnout from our school that supported all our competitors and represented our school well.  Thank you so much for all the hard work that led to such a great weekend for everyone.  Our team trophies are on display now in the office, and the LEST artwork submitted from our school is in the main hallway outside the library.

FOSS Curriculum

Boxes and boxes and boxes. OH my!!!

We have three new FOSS curriculum modules in the
middle school.

FOSS is better known as Full Option Science System. It is a research based K-8 science curriculum developed at the Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California, Berkeley. Students learn to appreciate science, as well as learn important scientific and engineering concepts, when they actively participate in their own investigations and analyses. The FOSS program was created specifically to provide students and teachers with meaningful experiences as they engage in active participation of scientific practices.

Follow the link FOSSWeb to learn about FOSS and the middle school curriculum. Highlights of the three new modules are presented below.

The Weather and Water curriculum is designed for 6th graders. It focuses on Earth's atmosphere, weather, and water. Understanding weather is more than reading data from a weather station. Students will study physics and chemistry during their investigations. Students will atoms and molecules, changes of state, and heat transfer before they launch into bigger ideas involving air masses and fronts, convection cells and winds, and the development of severe weather.

The Populations and Ecosystems curriculum is designed for 7th graders. An ecosystem is an organizational unit of life on Earth, defined by a physical environment and the organisms that live there. Organisms depend on their ecosystems in order to live and thrive. Unwelcome or unhealthy changes within an ecosystem can cause a domino effect which could cause death to some organisms. One agent of change in the Earth's ecosystems is humans. It is important that we understand how we effect ecosystems with our actions and technology. This course provides students with the first steps along the path of ecological understanding, with the hope that their future steps will be considered and measured, serving the interests of all life.

The Planetary Science curriculum is designed for 8th graders. Astronomy is the study of everything we observe beyond the Earth. The course focuses on the moon, the sun, the solar system, including the planets, the Milky Way, and the vastness of the cosmos. Concepts studied include the physical moon and its phases, the relationship between the sun and the Earth, the Earth's tilt and the seasons, the scale of the solar system, and space exploration and the search for new planets.
